DONALD TRUMP'S CRAVEN REPUBLICAN ENABLERS
May 11, 2017
Ughh Truuuuuuuump
In John Cassidy's article "Donald Trump's Craven Republican Enablers" he uses a formal diction to embark on a well constructed attack on Trump's recent actions. Throughout the piece, Cassidy uses a very formal style of diction to give himself a sharp edged spear to pierce through the hidden reasons behind Trumps recent firings, statements, or otherwise concerning statements.
It's pretty obvious that Cassidy has a negative attitude towards all things Trump as almost every other lead-in attacks one or another action of the president. By stating "If anyone thinks the president will stop here, they haven't been paying attention" Cassidy makes his tone towards all things Trump clear, and its obvious he's not a fan (completely understandable; it's Trump).
As stated previously Cassidy is very clear with his feelings towards Trump. Towards the end of the article it becomes even more clear as Cassidy attacks Trumps actions at almost every turn. I would say his purpose here is to shame the Trump Administration and bring to light who his allies he's strategically placed in various positions to allow himself to do pretty much anything on his own authority. This piece is targeted towards the general public in hopes that they'll realize the Administrations shadowy power-plays. I think Cassidy does a good job here breaking down his various moves and telling which positions Trump has infiltrated with his supporters.
The beginning of the article talks about the way our government was set up. Checks and Balances divided among different governmental bodies helped keep power limited and more directly in the hands of the people. Then Cassidy goes into the specific ways that Trump has seemingly worked around those checks and balances. Through his appointments and ties he sits in a position which is slowly becoming more and more hard to get him out of. Cassidy does a good job describing which of his allies in which positions can grant him which powers. Overall, Cassidy constructs his argument very well.
