Tightening Immigration policies threaten the daily lives of many Haitian Immigrants
Edwidge Danticat crafts a wonderful persuasive argument in his piece "A Harrowing Turning Point For Haitian." Danticat uses an elevated form of diction with casual hints to help understand and sympathize with the predicament many Haitian Immigrants are currently facing. He alludes to the constant fear some immigrants live in so that his audience will sympathize with them. It's obvious he cares about the issue very much as he has ties to one of the immigrants, and his longtime friend, Mr.D so it makes since that he would want to educate his audience and convince them to support the renewal of TPS for Haitians.
He uses Mr. D's personal experiences and life as an antecedent he can call back to and compare to the average life someone like him would experience. The whole immigration period and bureaucracy that bugs down process he can use Mr. D as a first hand eye witness to. Like previously stated he obvious cares about the situation and sees a concern for his friend.
He's writing this piece to help bring attention to the issue of current Temporary Immigrants as he see's their lives threatened by the White House Administration. He wants to bring it to light so that if an issue does come up, those enrolled through TPS will have some form of support. He uses appeals to pathos, trying to get his audience to connect on an emotional level with Mr. D and support his cause.
Overall, the argument is put together pretty well and Danticat gets his point across; Pay attention to how the new Administration handles immigrants in dire need of help.
